Understanding God’s Judgment and Mercy

As the generations pass after Cain and Abel, humanity continues to multiply. But instead of growing in goodness, the world becomes filled with violence and corruption.

Genesis 6–7 marks a major turning point in the Bible. It shows both the seriousness of human sin and the depth of God’s justice — but it also introduces a powerful example of faith and rescue.

This chapter explains why the Flood happens and how God preserves one family through it.

What Happens in This Passage

Genesis 6–7 describes the beginning of the Flood story:

  • Human wickedness increases across the earth.

  • God sees that every intention of the human heart is continually evil.

  • God announces judgment through a coming flood.

  • Noah finds favor in the eyes of the Lord.

  • God instructs Noah to build an ark.

  • Noah obeys God’s commands.

  • Animals enter the ark in pairs.

  • The rains begin, and the waters rise over the earth.

The Flood is not presented as random destruction. It is described as a response to deep and widespread corruption.

At the same time, God provides a way of rescue.

Key Themes for Beginners

1. Sin Has Consequences

Genesis 6 shows that human corruption had become extreme.

This passage reminds us that sin is not minor or harmless. It damages individuals, families, and societies.

2. God Is Both Just and Grieved

The Bible says that God was grieved by human wickedness.

This shows something important:
God does not delight in judgment. He is holy and just, but He is also deeply aware of human brokenness.

3. Noah Walks With God

Noah is described as righteous in his generation.

Like Enoch before him, Noah walks with God in a corrupt world. His obedience stands in contrast to the culture around him.

4. God Provides a Way of Rescue

Before the rain falls, God provides detailed instructions for the ark.

Judgment and mercy appear side by side. The ark becomes a symbol of protection and salvation.

How to Read This Passage

  • Notice the contrast between widespread corruption and Noah’s faithfulness.

  • Pay attention to how carefully the ark is described.

  • Observe Noah’s obedience — he does “all that God commanded him.”

  • Remember that this passage shows both justice and mercy together.

Try not to rush through it. The details matter.
